Yes, we are on summer break, but as I was putting our school things away I thought of how much we have enjoyed certain books over the years. It has been so fun to "meet" certain characters at different stages in my children's lives- starting with the easy readers and younger versions of stories and then graduating to the more complete versions in the upper grades.
Our Abby loved the easy reader "Keep the Lights Burning Abbie" so that when a friend (Hi, Linda!) recommended the biography, we were happy to read it. We all realized that the children's version didn't even come close to telling the story of Abbie and her family's heroism (of course not- no one wants to traumatize small children!). And we made a new literary friend through this book.
Jacob loves the story of the Wright brothers (with Grandpa and an Uncle as pilots and Daddy with flying experience, I guess it's genetic). Thankfully there are many wonderful books on these two men for Jacob to enjoy for years to come.
Lots of books on Abraham Lincoln.
And many from the "Little House" series.
We have the "Little House Cookbook" and years ago made several of the recipes. My kids still ask to make butter and we all remember fondly the vinegar pie we took on a picnic (tasted more like a lemon pie than anything else.) I loved reading "A Little House Reader" as it was filled with original writings from different members of the Ingalls family, both from times written about in the series and much from times beyond the series.
Nothing like a good book!
